| The
children we shelter have been neglected or abused physically, emotionally, and often sexually.
Children are referred to Safehaven by local Departments of Social Services from our surrounding area including Newport News, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Poquoson, Williamsburg, Norfolk, Hampton, James City County, York County, Gloucester, and Isle of Wight.

Safehaven has been approved as a charity to receive donations through the United Way’s Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (agency number 6221).

These children have often given up on trusting adults and have
not experienced healthy relationships with others.
They have difficulty expressing various emotions, and
many times display self-defeating behaviors.
Often children come to us with nothing, but the clothes
on their backs.
