Safehaven. A shelter for healing and hope

The children we shelter have been neglected or abused physically, emotionally, and often sexually. Children are referred to Safehaven by local Departments of Social Services from our surrounding area including Newport News, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Poquoson, Williamsburg, Norfolk, Hampton, James City County, York County, Gloucester, and Isle of Wight.

Safehaven has been approved as a charity to receive donations through the United Way’s Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (agency number 6221).

These children have often given up on trusting adults and have not experienced healthy relationships with others. They have difficulty expressing various emotions, and many times display self-defeating behaviors. Often children come to us with nothing, but the clothes on their backs.

Macy’s is having their annual “Shop for a Cause” on Saturday, September 20, 2008 to support local non-profit agencies. Basically they give coupons for 20% off for that day, and Safehaven will sell them to as many people as possible for $5 each. They will give me 200 at a time, and then once those 200 are sold, I call the representative with Macy’s and can get more. Of course, like so many things, this is a fundraiser with power in numbers. So the more we can sell, the more money we raise for Safehaven. We also will set up an information table that day, and will be able to sell coupons to customers in the store. Let me know if you are interested in donating $5 to Safehaven, or if you are interested in selling some to friends or co-workers. It’s a great cause, with a quick return for each individual that contributes.

Here are some numbers to put it in perspective on how a fundraiser like this can impact the children at Safehaven:

200 coupons -   $1000 = groceries for a month for the children
10 coupons -        $50 = an outing to the movies for 5-6 kids
35 coupons -      $175 = pays for a child to be at Safehaven for 24 hours
1000 coupons - $5000 = pays for a child to stay at Safehaven for a month
